Tools and Techniques Contest Giveaway! Contest Closed!

To find out more about the workshop click here.

Hello friends, As you know I have been art journaling for over 14 years. It’s been a saving grace for me – my journal (pages) have been a place for me to land when I’m going through stuff but also a place to document my joys and loves. It’s also a way for me to use humour to get me through some trying times…….like this one……

HEARINGLOSS1When i was diagnosed with hearing loss…..or this….

When i was going through a very difficult period in my life.

Or when i was having difficulties asking for money for a mojo session (just assumed my acquaintance knew what i charged) and ended up getting kale instead of money!

Sometimes I get a bit bored of regular journal pages so it’s fun to kick things up a notch or two by adding new techniques. So I’m pretty thrilled to be able to show you some new techniques – Flip Flop and Fly is the project I am sharing in the 21 Secrets Tools and Techniques online workshop at the beginning of April. Watch the short video trailer below I just created:

I’m excited to be able to give away one spot in the workshop. If you’d like to enter to win a spot please leave me a comment below letting me know what your favourite technique is for your art journaling and mixed media projects. I’ll be drawing a name next Wednesday March 30th at 9 am PST. Good Luck and thanks for entering! Please tell your friends.

The above image is a sneak peek of the class i’ll be teaching.

Can’t make the LIVE! broadcasts? No problemo! Each 21 SECRETS LIVE! broadcast is recorded and available for all members to keep and return to again and again!

But the party doesn’t just stop there–we’ll keep the loving going in a private Facebook group and Flickr gallery too–so you can share your work, give and receive feedback, and be a part of a heart-centered supportive community of Artists!

The beach, pumpkins, art journals and another Secret!

One of the cool things about working from home is that you can take some time out in the middle of the day to run errands or have a walk on the beach.  On Friday my friend Susan and I went to the beach for a walk – it was so nice to be able to walk barefoot!  It might be the last time this year as it looks like fall has set in.

On the way to the beach we saw the funniest sight.  A big pumpkin had grown outside of a confined area and was hanging over a wall – surely it would get too heavy and crash to the ground?  Not so….the intrepid owners of this pumpkin created a makeshift swing to give it a chance to mature. Isn’t it the cutest sight?

Here are some sneak peeks of the Teen’s Self-Esteem PDF and video I’ve been creating.  This past weekend Mr. G had the onerous task of editing and formatting my INDESIGN file.  He does some technical writing at work so he’s a good person to do this sort of job – he’s very thorough.  The video still needs fine tuning.  There always seems to be some thing we don’t know how to do which hangs up the project.  I suppose we are not meant to know how to do everything ourselves right? If you read about some of your favourite artists you’ll notice that many of them outsource work or have assistants (live or virtual), editors, ghost writers etc.  to help them realize their dreams.

Losing my Virginity

I read in Richard Branson’s autobiography Losing my Virginity that he surrounded himself with brilliant people who could do the things he was not good at.  He didn’t have to do it all and he didn’t!  He was just bright enough to know he cold not go it alone. Another thing i learned from Richard is that it’s okay to fail, just pick yourself up and try something different.  Richard is a big risk taker in business and in his private life and I believe that is why he is so incredibly successful.

Art Journaling favourites!

Art Journaling goodness – some of my favourite pages.

Did you know that you can still sign up for the 21 Secrets Art Journaling Playground until Oct. 1? Well you can and now Connie Hozvicka has added The glittery and super duper creative Andrea Schroeder of ABC Creativity to the Art Journaling family – as of August 1st Andrea will be offering “Dream Spark: Connecting to your soul to discover your deepest sparkliest greatest big heart dreams”. Connie is also adding her previous 21 Secrets workshop to the mix – it’s called “Get it out: Get it Down”

Connie has some wonderful Secrets – hop on over to her blog and participate in her fabulous give away. You have to create a post on art journaling (but I’ll let you check out Connie’s post for details).  You need to hurry as the contest ends on Sunday at 11 pm PST.

Here is my post on Art journaling:

The thing i love to do most in art journaling is draw faces.  This face was drawn with micron pens, coloured with twinkling H2O’s and watercolour pencil crayons.

One of the ways to art journal i love best is to work through issues that are bothering me at the time. This page started out as a sketch which i ended up loving and then i kept adding and adding stuff (decorative elements).  Lastly i wrote the words about an issue that was bugging me.  I always feel better after getting it down. It’s like purging what’s within.

This is a very old journal page I created while i was painting houses and obviously NOT liking it. I think the whimsical additions of the feather and the glittery pipe cleaner provide an interesting contrast to the rather somber image don’t you think? My journal pages eventually tell me what i need to be doing to get happy once again.  I love it when i have this dialogue happening!

Favourite Art Journaling Supplies: micron pens, twinkling H2O’s, watercolour pencil crayons – sometimes gel pens, water soluble pastels and fluid acrylics. I also use regular acrylics and folkart paints for backgrounds.  You really don’t need many supplies to begin art journaling.  Experiment first before buying a whole whack of things. One idea I just had was to get together with some friends for an art journaling date.  Have everyone bring their favourite supplies to share – that way you can sample different tools to see if you like them enough to make an investment to buy them.

Here’s a little secret – if you want to write down stuff like verbal you-know-what and you don’t want anyone to be able to ready it then write out your feelings on the background of the page and then go over top it with thinned down gesso and add some colour with acrylics.  That way no one can see what you have written.

As many of you know my favourite substrate is usually inexpensive cardstock. Once in a while i do use watercolour paper.

Here are some of my favourite art journalers – of course i can also list the teachers at 21 Secrets as my favs too!
